The full title of the talk is “Major Surgery. Home the Same Day? How Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center Built Its Team, Technology and Pathway for Same-Day Joint Replacement.” Dr. Avino and Mr. Cazares will give an inside look at what has to come together, clinically and operationally, for a hip or knee replacement patient to go home the same day. Topics include:

• Robotic-assisted surgery: how Mako technology supports personalized planning and precise implant placement
• Patient selection and optimization: how candidates for same-day discharge are identified and prepared before surgery
• Modern anesthesia and pain management: approaches that reduce reliance on opioids and support early mobility

• The dedicated team and pathway: the protocols, staff, and coordination that support a safe same-day discharge

About Same-Day Joint Replacement

Same-day joint replacement means a patient has a hip or knee replaced and is discharged home the same day rather than staying overnight in the hospital. It is not appropriate for every patient. Candidacy depends on overall health, support at home, and the surgical plan, and it is a decision made together with the surgeon and the care team.

For appropriate candidates, same-day pathways are built on several developments Dr. Avino will cover in the talk: robotic-assisted planning with Mako technology, the direct anterior approach for hip replacement, multimodal pain management, and early mobilization with physical therapy on the day of surgery. Many patients who go through a same-day program report getting back to normal activity sooner, though recovery timelines vary from person to person.

Dr. Avino has performed over 1,400 robotic-assisted hip and knee replacements, including more than 1,000 robotic hip replacements, and 100% of his current primary hip replacements use the direct anterior approach. He serves on the governing board of Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and chairs its Orthopedic Co-Management Committee.
